Alex Ridout – Trumpet
Alex is 17 years old and was born in in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. She began studying the trumpet at the age of 9 starting with lessons at her junior school in Aylesbury. She joined many bands at her local music centre and at the age of 14 gained a place at the Classical Junior Department of The Royal Academy of Music and a year later she also gained a place on the Junior Jazz Department, also at The Royal Academy of Music. Alex has successfully auditioned for the NYJC (National Youth Jazz Collective) Summer School for the last 4 years and was part of the NYJC flagship band, gigs include the Barbican Freestage, Leicester Jazz Festival, the Southbank Centre (London Jazz Festival) and at the House of Commons with Dave Holland. Last summer (2015) she was one of two UK 16-19 years olds chosen to attend the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony in Stockton, California.
She was most recently crowned winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Jazz Award 2016, competing with musicians 5 years older. Alex now attends The Purcell School for her sixth form studies. Alex joined the band at the start of the 2015/16 year and was featured in the band’s first youtube video cover of Chaka Kahn’s – “Ain’t Nobody.” Alex can be seen playing on a Vincent Bach Stradivarius model 43.
